Physician’s perspective: What’s the missing link for health IT systems?

Article by Donald Voltz, MD, in MedCity News:

“We are sitting on the edge of great potential in healthcare, if we are able to harness the power of the data currently flowing into the complex healthcare delivery system. To reach this end, we need to look beyond the ends of the data spectrum, the collection and storage. The real potential comes from the flow of data and meaning. Value and improvements in the delivery of care becomes realized when we tap into the flow data. To improve healthcare by leveraging technology, we need to create more value than we capture. Measurement of the insights we gain and transmit is far more important to enhancing care delivery and impacting our ailing healthcare system.”

Fantastic article by Dr. Voltz.

When you consider that large, integrated delivery healthcare networks have 100s of different applications in their IT environment, generating data around their given function, non-stop, throughout the day, every day, it’s hard to imagine how the IT team can harness the millions of HL7 messages generated daily and gain some sort of actionable insights for caregivers.

We believe that leading, sustainable health IT systems depend on a best-of-breed integration layer that serves as the health data platform to interoperate between applications. While much attention has been placed on the EHR system, we believe Corepoint Integration Engine serves as the catalyst for all health data activities and allows IT departments to break free from EHR and application “data siloes” and gain full control of their health data.

Once health data is centralized through Corepoint Integration Engine, the IT team is empowered with full knowledge of system performance and the enormous amount of health data generated every day. Without actionable insights from the mountains of data generated every day, hosptals run the risk of becoming data systems, not healthcare systems.
