For the first time since the pandemic, the SNOMED CT Expo took place in-person, allowing clinical terminology subject matter experts (SMEs) to connect with peers. There was even a hybrid version of the event to allow attendees who couldn’t attend in person the chance to join in on the fun. Overall, the 2022 SNOMED CT Expo was a blast.
The expo organizers hosted SNOMED workshops three days before the expo, so everyone was up to date and very eager to talk about their experiences with SNOMED CT when I arrived.
I attended sessions about the upcoming SNOMED and LOINC collaboration, research projects where SNOMED was used creatively, and how to combine SNOMED CT with other terminologies. Many great ideas were shared during these sessions.
I had the opportunity to speak with so many great people at the event. I spoke with E-helse directorate which is already a user of Lyniate HealthTerm. I finally met some of them in person, which was lovely. I also got a chance to talk with Conteir, which is a user of CareIndexing for decision support. I also really enjoyed speaking with some of the people at SNOMED International to hear what is on the roadmap and where they are heading with the terminology.
I spoke with people from other countries that have taken a strategic decision about using SNOMED as their national healthcare terminology. They were at the conference to collect others’ experiences with SNOMED implementations. It was interesting to hear the plans and challenges they were facing. For example, countries such as Norway, New Zealand, Netherlands, and South Korea have a heavy push on using SNOMED CT.
Besides having a national push for using SNOMED, a lot of research projects were presented to show the capabilities of SNOMED in different settings. For example, they shared how to leverage SNOEMED in value sets for specific use cases, such as COVID-19 reporting and how artificial intelligence (AI) in combination with SNOMED opens more possibilities.
I did a presentation on the second day about CareIndexing and how it can be used to convert unstructured into a structured and codified output. I enjoyed sharing the capabilities of CareIndexing as well as the great impact it can bring to a variety of healthcare settings. The presentation initiated some interesting questions good discussions with a broad set of people.
I am thankful for the opportunity to interact with such a large range of stakeholders and experts within the terminology area. I’m looking forward to the follow-up meetings!
